Louise: So I wonder about eating meat. I ate meat yesterday and I feel bad about it, but I enjoyed it. So I want to know – is it better to be vegetarian than to kill animals and eat them?
Nantene: And so when you say you feel bad, do you mean bad physically, or bad emotionally?
Louise: I feel bad emotionally because I have this idea that it is more spiritual to be vegetarian.
Nantene: We do understand. For each person it is different and each person must respect his or her deepest feelings on this issue. However, we would say this. All things are one thing, and when you are done being part of the one thing in this form, your form will return to the oneness and then you will be part of the one in a different way. At some point, you will return again to form, again as part of the oneness, but in a new form.
With that as the background, as part of the one, each form is intimately connected to each other form. I am sure you have heard the information of how you breathe in some of the same atoms that Shakespeare breathed in so many years ago?
Louise: I haven’t heard that one.
Nantene: Ah, yes! Yes indeed, and it is true because you are composed of atoms, there are atoms in the air you breathe and those atoms pass through form after form after form. So you, in a sense, contain some of the essence of the greatest thinkers of all time.
The same goes for non-human forms. You are all related in ways vastly bigger than you may think. So in this unfolding manifestation that you call life, it may at times be called for for one form to consume another form. If you were strolling through the jungle of Africa do you think that a lion, a hungry lion, would say, “It is not right to take the life on another being. I don’t think I will eat this human today.”
Louise: No.
Nantene: Probably not. That sucker would be on you in a second! You’d be history. So this is not to cheapen or demean the reverence you hold for other life-forms in any sense or manner. It is simply to give you a little bit different perspective on the inter-relatedness of life and the way that you share this journey with other life forms on this planet.
So, to the best of your ability, you treat other life forms with humanity. Based on your research, you know that some growers of vegetables and some stewards, if you will, of meat-providing sources do their best to act with integrity in what they provide to be eaten. And as best you can you can honour that and choose those sources.
You can give thanks to the life-form that is changing it’s being-ness to give you additional life, as perhaps the Native Americans give gratitude for the animals that they kill, that they then consume, and indeed use each useable part of to give them extra life.
And know that at some point your body will pass, your body will return to the earth and you will give extra life in some other way. It is an unfolding, never-ending miracle, a cyclical process of sharing, giving and receiving of life that you are participating in.
And if you ever do find yourself walking alone in the jungles of Africa, be careful!
Louise: Thank you! I’ll try not to do that.
Nantene: This does not mean to say that you must consistently or should consistently eat meat. It is important for you ultimately to honour the wishes of your being and the desires of your form. Your physical form is the visual and tangible manifestation of your spirit, yes?
[Louise agrees]
Nantene: It is that shifting of energy from pure spirit into real form, into physical form, and the desires that you have on a deep level in physical form are not disconnected from the other end of the spectrum. They reflect energetic pathways. So if you find yourself craving meat there is a reason for it and it is best perhaps to honour that.
If you still do feel … if you struggle emotionally with the idea, consider the story I have just told about the relationship of all things, the dance of life, and find your own way to give gratitude to the life that has participated in giving you more life – and know that you find other ways than sacrificing your body to give more life to other life as well. Does that make sense?
Louise: Yes, I think so. One of the teachers I have been reading is Yogananda, and Yogananda and his teachers did not eat meat and I feel if I want to be like them, then maybe I should copy them.
Nantene: Hmm, and that is an admirable desire. However, you are not Yogananda, thank goodness!
Louise: That’s for sure.
Nantene: Nor, and this is the important part, nor are you living in the world that Yogananda lived in. You are not coming to maturity in that world. Therefore, there may be a time when you are consistently in the context and in the frame of vibration where you would be vegetarian as Yogananda was vegetarian, specifically focusing on the way it influences your vibration.
Louise: Right, yes.
Nantene: However, at this time you live in a very different world than Yogananda and you are at a different point in your maturity and on a different path. Therefore for the moment there may be times when you are called on to eat meat.
Louise: I don’t know why I get so upset. [Louise is crying.] Thank you.
Nantene: What upsets you?
Louise: Would you believe me if I said I didn’t know?
Nantene: Most certainly. I am very gullible. I’ll believe anything.
Louise: There is no reason for me to cry when I talk about Yogananda.
Nantene: Ah, but it is more Yogananda than the idea of meat that you cry about at this point?
Louise: Yeah, I feel like I can never live up to their teachings or expectations and I will never be one of those great people. I feel like I don’t try very hard, or I’m just too lazy, or … I don’t want to say that I’m not good enough because we already talked about that.
Nantene: You have a good memory.
Louise: I just feel a lot of emotion about it, I guess.
Nantene: Do you think that such a great teacher as Yogananda would be in the least surprised by your struggles on the path? Or do you think that he would not embrace every one of your struggles with the most radiant unconditional love?
Louise: Yes, of course he would.
Nantene: Of course he would! Therefore perhaps the way you can best be like Yogananda is to do the same for yourself.
Louise: That is a very good answer. Thank you.
Nantene: And do the same for others. But it may be that in previous lives you have shared that energy, that form, that history, and you resonate with it still in this lifetime. That is not the highest priority for you to know about, one way or the other. It may be enough to simply honour the connection [with Yogananda] and do your best as you feel called in this lifetime, and the world you live in, to follow the example in spirit of the great teachers that have come before – knowing that they look on you still with the greatest of kindness and love and understand every action you take.
So, does that address your concern? Is there more you would like to say about that?
Louise: It does address it. I feel like the greatest part of me chooses to be vegetarian but I am not there 100% yet. So I don’t want to put limitations on myself. I feel that my body doesn’t need a lot of meat at this moment, but I would strive still to be vegetarian.
Nantene: Strive still to be vegetarian while addressing the response to meat that you feel in your body? Or do you mean denying?
Louise: Not denying.
Nantene: Okay, and so that sounds good.
Louise: Thank you. But you did say, or you hinted at it at least, that being vegetarian has a different vibration, has a different vibration in the body? Em, that’s not the way it came out. So does eating meat lower the vibration of one’s energy and body?
Nantene: It can. It does not always have to be that way. Especially considering the path that a person may be on. If someone is on a similar path to someone such as Yogananda, then at some point eating meat will potentially lower the vibration or hold back the vibration from becoming as high as quickly.
If someone is on a somewhat different path, then the eating of meat is not so much of a concern. For remember, as you are researching and discovering, your intention and perception is an important part of what happens to your vibration and how you choose to participate and what you choose to believe in and what you choose to agree to. So if you choose to participate and accept the vegetarian path at some point as a way of continuing to raise your vibration, then so it will be. If you choose to take a different approach, then meat will play a different role in your vibration.
